  3. Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant: In this procedure, stem cells are taken from a newborn baby’s umbilical cord. The stem cells are frozen and stored until the need for a transplant arises. The process is quite similar to a blood transfusion; injected blood cells travel from the blood to the bone marrow.

  1. Pre-Transplant Evaluation: Comprehensive medical assessment, blood tests, organ function tests, and donor matching.
  2. Stem Cell Collection: Stem cells are collected from the patient or donor.
  3. Conditioning Therapy: High-dose chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or both are administered to prepare the body.
  4. Stem Cell Infusion: Healthy stem cells are infused through a vein, similar to a blood transfusion.
  5. Engraftment: The transplanted stem cells begin producing healthy blood cells.

Doctors perform Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) testing to identify a compatible donor. A matched sibling donor is often preferred, although unrelated matched donors may also be suitable.
